the windows and gauzy drapes
obstruct the frayed light
drifting into the room
by the bed
a telephone stand
draped with a phone book
held open by an ash tray
with cold ashes
and bent stubs
then the black telephone
an old rotary dial
rings
startlingly loud
breaking the heavy silence
with hopeful anticipation
then an abrupt cruel silence
as the darkness increases
with no answer
