All I could hear was the tick-tocking of the cooling engine.
The rain had stopped. The birds had retreated with twilight’s onset.
The hunters of the night had not yet shone. The dust from my abrupt
stop on the pullout was settling and my eyes were beginning to
adjust to the falling darkness. I knew I had come to the right
decision, to the right place.
I was only a half-hour or so out of the city.
I didn’t know, as I had taken off my watch preparatory to the night’s
activities. The body in back was probably still warm.
