In order to plug in the fan I had to unplug the clock radio so I’m not sure what time it was when the noises started, but probably after three. The room was cool and pleasant. Outside, something was being killed. There were yelps and growls. Then it stopped; then something in the next yard over was killed. In the morning I read that all the neighbourhood pets had been slaughtered in the night by the first puma ever to enter downtown Toronto. I was certain that there would soon be others. This was much debated in the coffee shop.
