Issue #15: Quirky Love, Table of Contents
So we may be a bit behind on the Valentine's Day curve, but we never liked to follow the crowd. And seriously, this issue is even more quirky and romantic than usual.
Enjoy! Oh yeah, that's Editrice Liz on what we assume is our cover photo, unless it proves too shockingly quirky for you all.
Prose (fiction, creative non-fiction, flash fiction, essay): no more than 3000 words or about 4 single spaced pages. If you submit something longer (and you can, but no novels, please), we will likely excerpt or publish it over two issues. In this case, please note in your cover letter that you are aware of this policy
Poetry: No more than 60 lines.
Artwork: .jpeg attachment. Both color work and black and white work may be featured. If The Toucan ever goes back to print, all images will be in black and white.
If a submission is accepted but not used in the latest issue, it will be given priority printing in coming issues. Submissions are always open!
Poem of the Week: a feature that highlights a piece, usually a poem but can be flash prose, from our always fruitful submission pile. Appears every Friday except when an issue has been published that week or in times of sheer catastrophe. Poems of the Week, with rare exceptions, are not printed in later issues. (However, we may do a collection of them at some point)
Oh hey. Newly accepted work will wind up in Issue #20, in February.
Multiple and simultaneous submissions are fine (within reason). However, we will only publish two pieces from an author in one issue. PLEASE notify us if submission is simultaneous.
Authors will be notified within a month (at hopefully latest) as to their work’s status.
If your work is accepted, we'll ask you for a three-sentence bio, so be prepared. Work will appear on our site until further notice.
Payment: A publishing credit, the satisfaction of a job well done, and the smiles of adoring readers.
Submissions need to be emailed to thetoucanmag@gmail.com as Word attachments. If you have trouble with attachments or an odd word-processing program, it is fine to copy work into the email body.

NEXT ISSUE:
ISSUE #22 IN MID July. ALSO, FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE, WE WON'T BE DOING PRINT ISSUES. BOTH THE LORAX AND THE GRINCH HAVE SOME SAY IN THIS.
The Toucan has its roots at Columbia College in Chicago, IL. The Toucan is christened as such from past experiences at Brookfield Zoo. It can be reached at thetoucanmag@gmail.com and is also on Facebook.
